What is the Culbertson Collection?

Answer

The Culbertson Adult Special Collections consist of materials that originate from historic donations throughout HPL's existence, and is named in honor of Warren A. Culbertson, whose estate made a generous donation to the archives. Reference works on the history of the book and printing, and examples of rare and fine press books are also included. Of special note is the Milsaps Collection, gifted by Major John Ephraim Thomas Milsaps of the Salvation Army, which includes the most complete run in existence of the War Cry, the Salvation Army newspaper that Milsaps edited.

How do I view items in the Culbertson collection?

Many of the books are in the Houston Public Library’s catalog. The advanced search allows you to select the Houston Metropolitan Research Collection as the Library you want to search. Search for a subject you are interested in. If a book in the Culbertson Collection covers the subject it will come up. The books are requested in the reading room of the HMRC. We can pull up to five books at a time. Watch this orientation video to get acquainted with the rules of the HMRC’s research room.
