How do I get started in genealogy?

How do I get started in genealogy?

Answer

The best first option is to talk to older living relatives and gather information from them. Also, look for any family bibles, letters, documents, or other papers in your family's possession.

Then, beginning with yourself, write down the vital information (dates and places of birth, marriage, death, as applicable) about yourself, your parents, grandparents, great grandparents and so on.

Use this basic information as a reference when you start exploring other genealogical records, to make sure you are on track and tracing the correct family line.
